A fit people is a fit nation, a fit nation is a healthy nation and a healthy nation is a wealthy nation’’ The health situation in Nigeria is frightening as there is a sharp rise in preventable deaths caused by diseases such as heart diseases (Myocardial infarction, Coronary heart diseases, Stroke and other cardiovascular diseases), Diabetes, Cancers, Bone diseases (Osteoporosis, Osteoarthritis) and other medical conditions.
Unfortunately, many people find solace in over eating, excessive drinking, narcotics and smoking. While modern medicine is trying to check these ailments, some people have come to appreciate the fact that physical fitness training actually goes a long way in solving such problems and accord people a more fulfilling life. Fitness training helps to improve and protect the heart, bones, skeletal frame, immune system and balance blood sugar levels.
Following years of practical and theoretical research based on our local conditions and circumstances, we have evolved with well-articulated fitness regimens to help Nigerians achieve desired fitness levels. To this end we aim (in collaboration with relevant stakeholders) for the celebration of a “National Fitness Day in Nigeria.
In the last one year therefore, the Amateur Bodybuilding and Fitness Federation of Nigeria (ABBFN) has been championing an advocacy for the official adoption of a National Fitness Day for Nigeria. The advocacy is receiving very positive attention in the House of Representatives, where the proposed bill on the subject matter has successfully passed through second reading. Mention must be made of the efforts of Honorable Duoye Diri, who is a patron of the Amateur Bodybuilding and Fitness Federation of Nigeria (ABBFN), and sponsor of the National Fitness Day bill in the House.
Given the positive feedback on the advocacy, the Amateur Bodybuilding and Fitness Federation of Nigeria (ABBFN) have concluded plans in partnership with the National Assembly and the Sports Writers Association Nigeria (SWAN) to celebrate the National Fitness Day in Nigeria in June 2017 in grand style. As a point of interest, many countries have already dedicated special annual days to commemorate the importance of fitness and Nigeria would be aligning itself with a progressive culture.
It is a given that political leaders, celebrities, Pastors, General Overseers and Imams have influence over their constituents, fans and followers and can thus be the crucial blocks in the foundation towards attaining healthy lifestyle in mainstream Nigeria. In addition to active media presence which can motivate people into changing their life styles, these classes of persons also have access to the masses through the pulpit and soap box with capacity to enact laws that can hasten the attainment of a healthy life style for the majority of our people. To motivate the people to change would however require our leaders, Celebrities, Imams and Pastors and General Overseers to demonstrate healthy lifestyle and physical fitness that engenders healthy body and healthy mind. We want our leaders to be healthy.
In furtherance of the stated objective coupled with the need to heighten awareness and increase motivation for immediate change towards a more healthy life style by leaders and their followers; Mr. Soye Elekima, Representative of the International Federation of Bodybuilding and Fitness (IFBB) in Nigeria ( 2 times number 1 winner as the “Best Fitness Administrator in Africa”) and the Health Fitness Revolution Team,(cardiologists, orthopedic surgeons, general surgeons, gastrointestinal (GI) surgeons, physiotherapists, physiologists) and Fitnestalkshow media, would carry out a research, on all available data on politicians, Pastors, Ministers , Imams, Actors, Hosts, Musicians and Comedians online, with a combination of interviews, library, industry literature, nutritional habits, age fitness levels, medical issues, as well as involvement and promotions of a healthy lifestyle for the selection of the : the Fittest Politician, Fittest Clergyman, Fittest Celebrity, Fittest Business Tycoon for the celebration of a National Fitness Day in Nigeria, were winner will be conferred an award by the International Federation of Fitness and Bodybuilding (IFBB) as the Fittest Gym in Nigeria.
As part of the build up activities for the celebration, there will be weeklong programmes, like
- Launching of the Swap Naija Voucher

- No Smoking, No Alcohol
- Low Salt, Low Sugar
- Fitgift
- Nigeria Fitness Award/Celebration
WHY NATIONAL FITNESS DAY
Researchers conducted by some Nigerian Teaching Hospitals, have identified heart related issues such as Stroke, Heart attack as the measure causes of over 93.7% of the sudden and unexpected deaths (SUD) in the Country. The researchers also found that more males than Females at a ratio of 21, are affected, and the average age of the victims is 47.3 years. They blamed the rise in SUD on rural to urban migration, increased salt and fat intake from the consumption of processed foods, increased tobacco use and sedentary lifestyle.
– Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUT), Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital (OAUTH), University of Port Harcourt teaching Hospital (UPTH), University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH), Among others. Everybody whose business or means of livelihood is fitness related is a critical stakeholder. That is, every gym owner, fitness instructor, supplement manufacturer or distributor, apparel or kit manufacturer or distributor, sports beverages’ manufacturers or distributors, water processing firms etc
WHO ARE STAKEHOLDERS
It must be emphasized that the reason the category of persons listed above are deemed to be stakeholders is because they derive financial benefits from fitness activities and events. Apart from the general wellness of the entire citizenry, the identified stakeholders, as listed above are potentially, the biggest immediate beneficiaries from any positive development in the fitness industry.
WHAT ARE STAKEHOLDERS BENEFIT
The National Fitness Day would heighten general level of awareness and consciousness of Nigerians about Fitness. Activities that will be lined up to celebrate the day will encourage more Nigerians to embrace fitness.
The above would simply translate to an upswing in business traffic at the Gyms, Supplements’ consumption, increased patronage for running Shoes, kits and Apparels, Sports beverages and exercise equipment etc
Businesses thrive on numbers. If a quarter of the estimated 180 million people in Nigeria embrace fitness, the industry will suddenly become a massive money-spinning sector.
Here is an opportunity for all the stakeholders to come together, and make our industry massive, and money spinning.
